The Importance of Cargo Worthy Container in Shipping

40ft Cargo Worthy Container 3

A cargo worthy container (CW) refers to a used shipping container that remains suitable for transporting cargo across countries or for import and export purposes. It is important to note that not all used containers are fit for loading and unloading operations, especially when it comes to facilitating international cargo shipments.

Most used containers typically show signs of rust, dents, scratches, and other wear. To determine whether a used container qualifies as cargo worthy, a surveyor carries out inspections to evaluate the container’s structural integrity, doors, locking system, and flooring.

Used containers that fail the inspection are generally repurposed into modified containers, such as office containers, accommodation units, storage containers, toilets, or workshops. Meanwhile, those that meet the criteria as cargo worthy containers (CW) are certified, granting them validity for cargo transport, storage, export, and repeated use in shipping activities.

Why is cargo worthy container status so important when it comes to used containers? Here are several reasons:

  • Safety. A cargo worthy container is far safer than other used containers as it undergoes thorough inspections and receives certification.
  • Compliance. Export regulations and international shipping laws require exporters to use cargo worthy containers.
  • Durability. CW containers are tested for resilience, capable of withstanding harsh weather conditions, and can be used for many years.
  • Resale Value. Compared to uncertified used containers, a certified cargo worthy container has a higher resale value.
  • Lower Additional Costs. Using a cargo worthy container saves costs by minimizing the need for repairs or unit replacement.

If you are looking for used containers certified as cargo worthy, you can find them at Tradecorp. Established in Indonesia in 2014, Tradecorp is an international company supporting business operations and field projects by providing shipping containers, offshore DNV containers, ISO tank containers, modified containers, modular prefabricated buildings, and light gauge steel construction.

Enquire about General Purpose

As explained above, a used container must undergo an inspection before being declared a cargo worthy container. This inspection is carried out by a certified surveyor based on the requirements of the CSC (International Convention for Safe Containers).

The CSC, established in 1972 by the United Nations together with the International Maritime Organization, was created with the following objectives:

  • To ensure the safety of human life during the transportation and handling of containers.
  • To facilitate international container transport by providing uniform international safety regulations.

Once the inspection is completed and the container passes the evaluation, a CSC plate will be affixed to the shipping container. The CSC plate contains important information such as the container model, manufacturer’s name, country of approval and approval reference, date of manufacture, manufacturer’s serial number, container number, maximum gross weight, allowable stacking weight, and racking test details.

Used Containers with Wind and Watertight (WWT) Status and the Difference from Cargo Worthy Container (CW)

A used wind and watertight (WWT) container is a second-hand container guaranteed to be free from leaks and holes. However, it may have patches or visible repairs due to damage sustained during previous shipping activities.

Unlike a cargo worthy container (CW), a WWT container cannot be used for international cargo transport. This is because WWT containers are not equipped with a CSC plate, meaning they have not passed CSC inspections.

As a result, WWT containers are typically used only for storage purposes. Their price is generally lower compared to a cargo worthy container, as they do not undergo the CSC-regulated inspection process.
