Steel has a unique property in that its strength depends on the amount of carbon and iron as its main components. Characteristics of Steel Material

This material is very popular due to its combination of strength, adaptability, and long-term usability. The main characteristics of steel material are:

1. High Strength

4 Types of Steel Material

There are 4 types of steel material, each with different functions and compositions:

1. Carbon Steel

The carbon content of carbon steel determines its classification:

  • Low Carbon Steel: Carbon content less than 0.3%. Used for general products like building frames and machine components due to its formability and weldability.
  • Medium Carbon Steel: Carbon content 0.3-0.6%. Stronger than low carbon steel and often used for structural applications requiring higher strength.
  • High Carbon Steel: Carbon content more than 0.6%. Hard but more brittle, used for knives, cutting tools, and springs.

2. Alloy Steel

This steel material is also known as alloy steel, containing additional alloying elements like nickel, chromium, molybdenum, and vanadium that enhance properties such as strength, wear resistance, and corrosion resistance.

  • Grade 4130/4140: Used for machine parts and automotive applications due to high tensile strength and wear resistance.
  • Grade 4340: Very strong and used in heavy applications like shafts and gears.

3. Stainless Steel

Stainless steel contains at least 10.5% chromium, which provides corrosion resistance. This steel is safe for use in exterior construction due to its exceptional corrosion resistance and greater ability to withstand harsh weather conditions. Electrical gadgets also often use stainless steel.

  • Grade 304: The most common type of stainless steel, used in kitchen equipment, medical devices, and industrial applications.
  • Grade 316: Contains more nickel and molybdenum, providing higher corrosion resistance, particularly against saltwater and chemicals. Suitable for maritime and chemical applications.
  • Grade 410: Hard and used in applications requiring high abrasion resistance.

4. Tool Steel

Tool steel is used to make cutting tools, molds, and machinery. This steel has resistance to heat and wear.

  • Grade D2: Highly wear-resistant and used in the production of knives and molds.
  • Grade H13: Heat-resistant, often used in molds and hot metal punching tools.

The classification of steel provides a more detailed and nuanced way to categorize steel beyond basic types such as carbon, alloy, stainless, and tool steel. This classification considers various factors that affect the properties, performance, and applications of steel. Here is an explanation of each category:

1. Composition

Refers to the chemical composition of the steel, focusing mainly on the amount of carbon and the presence of other alloying elements.

2. Finishing Method

The finishing stage of steel refers to how the steel is processed and completed after production, which impacts surface quality, strength, and ductility.

3. Production Method

Production methods classify steel based on how it is made, affecting its consistency, quality, and properties.

4. Microstructure

The microstructure of steel refers to its internal crystalline structure, which significantly influences hardness, strength, and toughness.

5. Physical Strength

Physical strength refers to the classification of steel according to mechanical properties such as tensile strength, yield strength, and elongation.

6. Deoxidation Process

The deoxidation process involves removing oxygen from liquid steel, affecting the purity and internal structure of the steel. Oxidized steel results in uniform properties and fewer internal voids or gas pockets.

7. Heat Treatment

Heat treatment modifies the physical and mechanical properties of steel, enhancing characteristics such as hardness, ductility, and toughness.

The quality of steel is classified based on its suitability for specific applications.
